Mar West | The Hillside Opens Up
We returned to Mar West this month to document work in progress. What used to be a big hillside is now cut back and a new form is starting to take shape. Step under the house and it immediately feels different. A network of temporary supports hold the existing structure while the site around it changes.   The first major activity this month was excavation for the new lower level and future garage. Steel posts (soldier piles) have been installed along the new foundation line. As the team cuts into the hillside, wood lagging is placed between the piles to hold...

Bullseye | Self Performed Craft
The Bullseye Home is a small guest house tucked into a redwood grove atop the rolling hills of Marin County. The project is nearing completion and the team is now working through punch list.  Site superintendent Juan Gonzalez leads Kasten’s self-perform carpentry crew, working closely with team members Marvin and Mario. His steady leadership has brought the project to this point and keeps the crew moving through the remaining items. The structure is compact but it has a strong presence. Redwood siding wraps the exterior. Brick flooring sets the tone inside. Wood casework and plaster walls keep the palette warm...

Mar West: Hillside Renovation in Tiburon
Mar West sits above the San Francisco Bay in Tiburon. The waterfront and the hillside are inseparable here. The views are wide open, and water and light create an atmosphere that feels alive. The neighborhood rises quickly from the waterfront and the slope that the house sits on is the defining constraint of this site. It demands working with what’s here rather than forcing something onto it. The original owners were Peter Berg, a Cal Poly architecture graduate and a founding member of Gensler, and his wife. That context helps explain the home’s mid century sensibility and its restraint on a...

The Finest Kind
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved founder Denis Walter Kasten. Denny passed away on February 2, 2025.  Below is a short story about Denny’s amazing life. Born in Franklyn, Michigan on March 16, 1945, Denny was one of six children. He idolized his father, Walter, and his older brother, John. Known as “Cigar Butt” by John’s friends, Denny loved hanging around the older guys, fetching beers from the fridge, watching them play cards and work on old cars. His best friend growing up was Louie DeRosier. Louie and Denny were known for running the streets...

Lands of Aiko Featured In Villegiardini
We’ve been featured in the Italian publication Villegiardini, where we’re excited to unveil our latest project: Land of Aiko. This luxurious and elegant villa harmoniously blends with its natural surroundings. Situated on a slope, it offers stunning views of San Francisco Bay, the Kent-Woodlands valley, and surrounding greenery. The design of the house draws inspiration from the owner’s time in Japan and the Colorado mountains where she was born. The extensive renovation was led by SWATT + PARTNERS studio, with architect Robert Swatt overseeing the project. The goal was to enhance the connection with nature and to create a space...
